Cultivation of Ulva fenestrata using herring production process waters increases biomass yield and protein content

Ulva spp. (sea lettuce) has recently gained attention as a sustainable protein source due to its high productivity and many nutritional properties interesting for the food industry. In this study, we explored possible industrial symbiosis between herring production processing industries fenestrata cultivation. We show that U. cultivated in process waters had four six times higher biomass yields (27.17 - 37.07 g fresh weight vs. 6.18 weight) three crude content (> 30% dry 10% compared seawater. Along with elevation of protein, also significantly increased levels all essential amino acids seaweed biomass. The some heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, lead, cadmium) was well below maximum allowed foodstuff. Therefore, quantities around 100 could be consumed daily following US Environmental Protection Agency’s reference doses. Combined, results cultivation great potential produce proteins growing world population. At same time, nutrients currently discarded are circulated back chain.
